Moderate drinking is defined as no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. People with an alcohol use disorder drink more than moderate drinkers and experience problems in their lives because of alcohol. One in six adults in the United States drinks at least seven drinks a day about four times a month. Some binge drinkers may go days or weeks without drinking and then drink to excess. There are many people who suffer from alcoholism but do not drink daily. It’s also determined by the nature of their relationship with alcohol and how it impacts their physical and mental health. Alcoholism is not only defined by the frequency or amount that someone drinks. You do not have to drink every day to have an alcohol use disorder.
